Texas States Recap

Let’s get right into my predictions because it was almost spot on! In MPO, Anthony Barela won the event with an overall dominant win, shooting -34. Gannon, who surged into second place with 10 striaght birdiies to finish off the final round, shot a -33. And Ezra Aderhold showed up and played incredibly well, shooting a -30. For what it’s worth, Adam Hammes finished in a tie for 11th at -19. He’s hovering too much around the top 10 that I am going to continue to pick him at courses I like for him because he is bound to win something this year.

In FPO, we had a surprise winner in Anniken Steen, the first Norwegian to win an Elite Series event. She shot a -29 to beat out Kristin and Ohn, who finished in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Those three were far and away the best competitors on the weekend and it was evident by their event ratings. Anniken finished the event with an average 1006 rating, Kristen with a 1000, and Ohn with a 997. The play is incredible in the FPO division and it is going to keep getting better. More 1000 rated disc golf tournaments, its good for the sport, and incredibly exciting to watch.

It’s interesting when diving into the stats to see the things that stood out. In FPO, Anniken just played consistent golf. She only had 2 OB strokes to lead the field and was the best in landing in C2 in regulation, but everything else was just consistent, finishing in the top 10 for everything. Of note, she gained a lot of strokes putting (9.07), which was good for second, as well as shot gained tee to green (11.63), which was third.

In MPO, AB simply dominated the weekend. Leading in parked percentage (30%), C1 in regulation (69%), C2 in regulation (87%), and strokes gained tee to green (18.21). Notably, the strokes gained tee to green was nearly 3 strokes clear of Gannon who was in second. Adam Hammes in third in this statistic by the way. IT’S GOING TO HAPPEN… Anyway, it was just AB’s weekend. We saw the best round of the year, when he shot a -16 1106 rated second round that catapulted him to the lead and ultimately a victory. Even a -15, 1102 rated final round by Gannon could not snatch the victory. Congrats to AB.

I enjoyed this venue, Brock Park showed up. I don’t mind high scoring events, as long as the holes are fair, the pros enjoy them, and it is an aesthetically pleasing course to watch. It’s not my favorite spot on tour, but it looked like a fun track. That said, Texas definitely lasts too long and I’m looking forward to a change in scenery. April 12th in Jonesboro.
