OTB Open Recap

As predicted, great weekend of disc golf. I know this post is coming a couple days after the end of the tournament, but I wanted to catch up on most of the Jomez content as well. Close(ish) battles in FPO and MPO made for some compelling golf and as I said in the preview, I just love the change of pace to the west coast. I can’t really identify why, maybe its just the scenery or the vibe, but it was a better experience. People really showed out at Swenson park, and it felt like a blast.

Let’s go to FPO where Ella Hansen finally won on the Elite Series. Great job. Even with only a 74% C1X putting stat, she just didn’t miss fairways. With an 89% fairway hits and 54% C1 in regulation to lead the field, her putting stats just didn’t matter. She was first in strokes gained tee to green with 21.32 strokes gained, which made up for her 1.70 strokes gained putting. She made it happen in spite of her putting. 1005 average event rating, back to that trend that I love to see. Holyn on the other hand, blew up again in the final round. Heading into the final round, Holyn was tied with Ella at -20. She ended up shooting a 910 rated +3 final round, just holding on to the 3rd spot overall. Even with tying Ella with that 54% C1 in regulation stat and leading the field with a 90% C1X putting, Holyn did not have it that final round. SEVEN OB strokes is not going to get it done. It just let to a day of scrambling and losing strokes to Ella. Hopefully, her time will come again soon. Shoutout to Paige Pierce finishing in 5th. Making me change my tune from my preview post, maybe she just needed to get out west and let it rip.

On the MPO side, Calvin won again, finishing with a -27 under, two strokes ahead of Gavin Rathbun. Sidenote, I should have trusted that Gavin Rathbun inclination. He is for real and will be on the top of my mind moving forward. Calvin averaged a 1058 event rating, nothing crazy, but certainly top class to take home the win. Calvin was incredible, leading the field in parked percentage (24%), C1 in regulation (51%), and strokes gained tee to green (19.34). So good and honestly, with both of these winners, it just reiterates to me some of the stats that really make or break a weekend, even if the putting is not top tier. It just needs to be good enough.

Overall, so much fun watching this weekend. I love seeing Paul McBeth back near the top, I love watching Gavin play, and I can’t get enough of Ezra Aderhold coming so close on so many of these tournaments, only to let it slip at some point. He is going to get one of these soon, its just a matter of when. No doubt.

Total purse for this event was $105,013. Calvin taking home $13,000 and Ella receiving $7,000. Next stop will be the Portland Open on May 30th and the Norway Open on May 31st. Off weekend starting… now. Time to go play some B-Tiers. Let it rip!
