This weekend, May 30th through June 2nd, the DGPT is in Portland Oregon at Glendoveer Golf Course for the Portland Open presented by Latitude 64. Split into two beautiful disc golf courses, Glendoveer East and Glendoveer West will provide player with a challenge for distance and accuracy, in a beautiful setting that has become a top course for me to watch on tour. Coverage for the event will be on Disc Golf Network starting at 12:30 PT ET for the FPO cards and 6:00 PM ET for the MPO cards. Post produced coverage will be on JomezPro as usual.
Last year, Adam Hammes beat Aaron Gossage in a playoff to win the event with a score of -30. On the FPO side, Kristin Tattar continued her dominant season, winning by four strokes over Sai Ananda to win at -25. This year, Glendoveer East will play as a Par 67 for the FPO with a total of 9,260 feet and Par 65 for MPO with a total of 11,130 feet. Glendoveer West is a Par 68 and a total of 9,757 feet for FPO and a Par 63 with a total of 10,527 feet for MPO. The course is fairly similar to previous year, continuing to tweak the course and improve it, as it has done since its premier on tour a few years ago.
The FPO field is without Kristin this week, so it will be interesting to see where things fall. I’m sure a couple of the bigger names will be in the mix again, including Missy Gannon, Ohn Scoggins, Holyn Handley, and of course, Ella Hansen coming off her win at the OTB Open. I think because of Ella’s putting inconsistencies that I mentioned ahead of the OTB Open, I don’t see her repeating. And it’s hard to imagine Holyn putting it all together right now. So who is left, Missy? Ohn? Sai Ananda also played really well here last year. My pick to win is going to be Ohn. She played really well here last year, finishing tied for 3rd, 3rd in strokes gained tee to green (16.43), and actually had a fairly low strokes gained C1X putting metric of 1.64. Considering she is top in the field in C1X putting, I think she kicks that bad putting round and secures a win here this weekend. 2nd, give me Paige Pierce. I think page showed a lot at OTB and she had a strong finish here last year. Well off the lead, but finishing in a tie with Missy for 6th. And speaking of Missy, I’ll take her finishing in 3rd.
On the MPO side, things are definitely trickier. There are just more players, more contenders, and honestly, more of a chance, in my mind, for someone to come out of nowhere to take home the victory. The toughest part is predicting those players. Overall, I think the usual suspects are back, AB, Calvin, Ricky, Gannon. I don’t see Adam repeating, I was on him early in the year, but he’s fallen off the last little stretch. I like Gossage, but his putting makes him unpickable in my mind, and while the Robinson brothers have played well here, they are not on my radar.
Outside contenders for me this weekend are Eagle, McMahon, Kyle Klein, Corey Ellis, and Ezra Aderhold. Eagle is Eagle and he has won here. Kyle did not play here last year, but statistically, is in the top 15 in almost every category. Ezra has just had the hot hand recently, and honestly, I just see him it continuing it out here. And Corey played well here last year, statistically, he is showing some type of success, and even though he hasn’t been able to put it together so far this year, I think he has that in him. Add that with the top guys, there are some options for the winner. I like AB, and I’ll kick myself if he wins, but even though his putting let him down here last year and he has been better this year, he’s just in a mini slump right now. Ricky and Gannon played very similar here last year and I think will be in contention again this year. So where do I go. Third place, I’ll take Kyle Klein. Kyle is solid, and I just don’t have the confidence yet in a Ezra to keep it up or Corey to put it together right now. He is coming off a bit of a break and I think with the reset, he is ready to go. Second place, give me Ricky. He has proven he can be successful here and I think that he will be able to put everything together again for a solid weekend. And in first, I trust him here and I think he goes for 3 straight on tour, give me Calvin. Last year he finished in 6th with a poor putting performance. Coming off the hot streak, its going to continue here. Calvin for the win. Let it rip!
