Portland Open Recap

With the school year winding down, my schedule has been busy getting the coverage complete and watching all of the rounds, but the Portland recap is here. I wanted to make sure it is in before the Beaver State Fling gets under way tomorrow.

Simply put, we had two awesome stories come out of a beautiful weekend of disc golf in the pacific northwest. First, Paige Pierce comes out and wins this tournament with a 995 event rating and a -26. She beat out Holyn Handly by two strokes, and really proved to the community that she is back, with room to improve. Earlier this season, I wasn’t picking Paige because I just was not sure how confident she was with her ankle to really put that full brace down. She showed in OTB that it was there with a top 10 finish, and that’s why I picked her to come in second this weekend. And she showed the hell up. Leading the field by a pretty good margin in strokes gained from tee to green with 19.28, she led the field in C1 in regulation percentage with 44%, and she capitlaized there with an 86% C1X putting statistic that was tied for 4th. That set of tools is going to be good enough to get the win. Even with a -.49 strokes gained from C2 over the weekend, Paige still came out on top. And previously, I viewed Paige as such a strong C2 putter, that if that comes along, look out FPO. We will be in for a heck of a summer.

On the MPO side, Gannon Buhr dominated. Straight up, dominated. He finished at -33, eight strokes clear of second place and Cole Redalen. Gannon was masterful from Day 1 to Day 4, there was never a doubt. He pulled away early, and kept the gas down. He led the field in C1 regulation at 46%, C2 in regulation at 72%, strokes gained from tee to green at 17.37 percent, and put it together on the putting green with a 92% C1X putting percentage. Just like Paige, that combination is just going to get it done. Bravo.

Paige went home with $8,000 and Gannon took home $13,000. The total purse from the Portland Open was $108,294. Heck of a weekend and such a good spot for the tour to visit. Looking forward to the Beaver State Fling starting tomorrow! Let it rip!
