The Disc Golf Pro Tour is in Estacada, Oregon this weekend, June 7th through June 9th, for the return of the Beaver State Fling presented by Innova Discs on the Elite Series. Once again, this weekend we get to watch disc golf on an absolutely beautiful property, and as an added bonus for myself, a little bit more of a woods/park style course. Coverage will get underway today at 12:00 PM Eastern for the FPO coverage and 5:30 PM Eastern for the MPO coverage. You can watch on DGN or YouTube for Day 1 and all post-produced coverage will be on JomezPro.
Looking at the course, very similar to last year. There have been a couple changes to adjust for scoring from years past, but on the whole, the design and the holes are thee same. Par for FPO is 69 with a total of 9,374 feet and par for MPO is 65 with a total of 10,733 feet.
Last year, Jennifer Allen won the event with a scorching -23 and Eagle McMahon took down the event last year with a -35. Of note, the Beaver State Fling was a Silver Series event, so the field was a bit more shallow, but still quite competitive. Holyn was in the mix last year, finishing in second, and on the MPO side, Calvin was right up there hunting down Eagle. It will be interesting to see where things fall this year, if the same cast of characters continue to be towards the top, if someone new will jump into the mix, or if previous years champs continue to thrive on this course. Cool note, Nate Doss is in the field this weekend. Since picking up disc golf in 2019, I have never seen Nate play, so I am excited to get to watch some coverage of him on the course.
On to my picks. Like I said, it is hard to really nail down who I think is going to be in contention from week to week. Is it the usual suspects, will players that played well last year stay in the mix, or will it be someone totally new? Jen Allen is not in the field this weekend, so she is not in consideration, and after that, Holyn really stands out. The stats that have stuck out to me this year is strokes gained tee to green and C1X in regulation. Combined with a decent putting stat, that should put you ahead of the field. And Holyn has that in both this tournament last year and throughout this year. At BSF in 2023, she was second to JA with a 21.34 strokes gained T2G and a 56% C1X in regulation. After a strong finish last week at the Portland Open, I’m rolling with Holyn. Everything after that is up in the air, do I go with Ohn? Val Mandujano has won here in the past, Missy is always in the mix, Sai sticks out based on previous results? I think I’m going to take a shot this week and go with Valerie Mandujano in second, and give me Sai Ananda in third.
On the MPO side, it is always so difficult to decide what to do. Gannon is playing incredible, Calvin is back to being so consistent, AB played well here last year, but has fallen off recently, Eagle has dominated this event that last couple years, winning three times since 2018, and then there is just the field that can pop off at any moment. I’m going to trust my gut a bit and say Gannon, although he DOMINATED last weekend, is not going to repeat. AB is on a bit of a cold streak and I don’t see him winning. Gossage is lingering out there, but the putting is just a problem for picking to win. Eagle… no, I’m going with Calvin. He led the field last year in strokes gained tee to green with 17.24 and led in C1X in regulation with 57%, despite losing to Eagle. Calvin takes this one down. BUT, give me Eagle to rise to second on this one. And rounding it out, in third place, I’ll take our Champions Cup champ, Andrew Presnell. A different weekend in picks with some wildcards, lets see how it goes. Enjoy the weekend! Let it rip!
