I was able to catch up on the past two tournaments over the past couple of days and have some thoughts about both. Let’s start with the Preserve, where Missy Gannon beat out Holyn Handley for the victory. This was probably the one result from the two tournaments that I thought fit. As well as Holyn played, leading the field in C1 in regulation and C2 in regulation, Missy was great off the tee, leading the field in strokes gained from tee to green with 20.40 and taking only 1 OB stroke over the three days. She outplayed the field, and surprised me with the victory over Holyn. On the MPO side, Ricky won by a stroke over Kyle Klein. And really, in the final round, there were a ton of competitors in it, including Isaac Robinson and Matt Orum. But in the end, Ricky’s putting was able to carry him to victory. 97% from C1X and 40% from C2. The real contender to Ricky in this one was Kyle. He missed a big putt on 16 that looked a bit right, but still could be considered a spit out. And then on 17, he took a kick OB to bogey, before eagling 18. But when you look at the numbers, Kyle really had an excellent weekend. Leading the field in C1 in regulation (72%), C2 in regulation (87%), and strokes gained tee to green (21.51). The problem when you’re playing that well is you have to putt lights out to secure the win and Kyle was unable to do it. 80% form C1X and 33% from C2. Just compare it to Ricky and you see why Kyle finished in second.
Total purse for the event was $85,906, Ricky taking home $10,000 and Missy with $6,500.
In Europe, the Pro Tour Europe was in Sweden for the Swedish Open. I did not get a chance to preview this tournament, but was able to watch a lot of the FPO live and caught a good portion of MPO on post produced coverage. James Proctor won his first Pro Tour Event, winning by three strokes over the rest of the field. And James just played great golf. Watching the coverage, his putter carried him to victory. 94% putting from C1X and 56% from C2. And the only category he led the field was OB strokes, taking only 1 on the weekend. James was the most consistent, and the result showed, even when not dominating the field. On the FPO side, Silva Saarinen won by five strokes over Henna Blomroos. Like James, Silva was great with the putter, getting hot with a 96% C1X statistic. But boy oh boy, looking at numbers, Henna really has the opportunity to win if she can ever figure out the putting woes. She led the field in C1 in regulation (46%), C2 in regulation (74%), and strokes gained tee to green (23.60). That strokes gained number was 5 strokes clear of any other player. But her putting crushed her. 54% C1X and 7% (1/15) C2. You just cant win that way. -2.66 strokes gained putting. Brutal. Henna can win, she just needs something to click on the putting side.
Total purse in Sweden was $61,370. James took home $8,020 and Silva walked away with $4,010. On to De Moines! Let it rip!
