What a weekend at Idlewild. This tournament was awesome, especially on the MPO side. In my opinion, Idlewild is a classic course on tour. There is a ton of scoring with a decent mix of wooded and open holes. I think Idlewild lacks some variation for the FPO field, but I think that is what happens when there is a course on tour that is a staple (only 1 FPO player landed in C2 on hole 10 all weekend). But this year, watching the professionals attack the course, with the out of bounds creeks everywhere and the turf greens, I actually was enjoying the viewing experience. The aesthetic still isn’t my favorite, but between the shot shapes required and the scoring opportunities, I was loving. And year after year, especially for the MPO field, the tournament comes down to the final couple of holes to determine the winner.
As for the winners, Ohn Scoggins won in the FPO division with a -10 and a 992 event rating. Natalie Ryan finished in second with a -6 and a 983 event rating, including a -7, 1013 rated hot round on the final day. In third was Sarah Hokom, finishing at -1 and a 972 event rating. Those three competitors were the only players in the field to finish under par.
But for Ohn, this was a dominant victory. She had a big lead going into the final day and the rest of her card on the final day did not show up. I imagine it has to be hard to keep the momentum going when your card isn’t playing well, but Ohn was able to do it. She led the entire field in pretty much everything. C1 in regulation, C2 in regulation, strokes gained tee to green, bogey percentage, OB strokes, birdie percentage. Incredible, and really was deserving of this victory. With the win, Ohn took home $8,000.
On the MPO side, Joseph Anderson aka Joey Buckets won his first Elite Series event of the year. I did not really know who Joey was heading into this season, but he has been near the top in so many tournaments this year, I quickly got to know his game. He is a smooth thrower, clean putter, and appears very calm throughout his rounds. And that was no different this weekend as he did everything to put him in a position to win. He did not lead any statistical category, but was top 3 in the main deciders, including C1 in Regulation, C2 in Regulation, and strokes gained tee to green. On the final day, Joseph never faltered when others around him did. He took advantage of their mistakes by staying calm and consistent, never giving any other players a chance to challenge him once he took hold of the lead. Joey finished at -28 and an event rating of 1054.
To round out the podium, Ezra Robinson climbed up the field with a final day -11 to finish in second with a -26 and a 1049 event rating. Calvin Heimburg also shot a -26 with a 1050 event rating. Of note, Isaac Robinson really had a chance to take this tournament home like he did in 2022, but a 3 holes stretch of triple bogey, bogey, and double bogey really ruined his final round. He still managed to finish in 4th.
With the win, Joey won $12,500 and a great pay day heading into the World Championships in a week and a half. The total purse at Idlewild was $105,768. Let it rip!
